Of course, the music is as great as it always was, and the remasters are much better than the old CDs. Still, it's troubling to see Sony taking a step back from the care that they had previously given to the Dylan catalog. Here's hoping Sony gives the future remasters of albums like The Basement Tapes and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid the consideration they are due.
Ok, so this is pre-electric, it is still as sharp as a razor. Lyrically this is probably one of his very best albums ever. The content is dark, but if that is not scary to you then I see no reason you wouldn't love it.
This album has aged very well due to it's simplicity and that topically the issues touched on are still relevant.
Times are a changin' is a classic that everyone knows ... or should.
hollis brown is a tale of tragedy that still has echoes today.
with god on our side is a sharp attack at the self righteous making a mockery of their self righteousness.
one too many mornings is another classic with a reflective lyric that is ageless
north country blues is another tragic tale
only a pawn in their game is an astonishing and insightful commentary on social manipulation and racism and many other topics.
boots of spanish leather is one of the most beautiful tales of lost love ever written
when the ship comes in is a great song that is somewhat lighter in mood than the rest of the album
lonesome death of hattie carroll is one of the greatest ever songs about corruption/inbalance in our system of (in)justice
and restless farewell is exactly that.
This album may be heavy going for some, but essentially this is lyrically one of the most important Dylan albums ever made.
