Product Description
Joni Mitchell is a songwriter, singer, musician, poet and painter. Her output of 19 albums over more than 25 years has created IMHO the most meaningful and consistent collection of work of any artist of her era. She's evolved from folk to pop to jazz to techno and back again, with touches of country and rock thrown in along the way, but in actuality none of these tags fit her, as she's always been marvelously unique and unclassifiable.
Amazon.com
She's only had four bona fide Top-40 American hits, and one was a Miles of Aisles live version of "Big Yellow Taxi" that's not included here. But after almost 30 years, she's finally delivered a 15-song compilation of her signature songs that will be a CD point-of-departure for casual fans and newcomers well into the new millennium. The companion Misses volume is an intriguing curio that might rather more generously have been marketed as a bonus disc. --Jeff Bateman

Joni does not have as clear and tuneful a voice as Joan Baez or Judy Collins, her most notable peers and rivals, but she is a more accomplished musician. And her voice has a quirky, lyrical lilt to it that is very appealing and perfectly suited to songs like Chelsea Morning. Although the Judy Collins version is more famous -- and was the one that inspired the Clintons to name their daughter -- Joni's version has a special playfulness and charm about it. Her Canadian accent, especially notable on The Circle Game ("Rownd and rownd...") adds to the charm.
Her rendition of Woodstock is not so good. It is out of her range and degenerates at the end into wailing that is painful to listen to. It is worth pointing out also that she never made it to Woodstock.
Despite that caveat, this is a thoroughly enjoyable album. Joni has had a long and varied career and has not been shy about repackaging songs, but if you want to sample her music, or want her most famous songs, this CD will suit you just fine.

Joni Mitchell is a real Canadian treasure, and icon.
She's head and shoulders above today's artists.
The music sounds better on vinyl because the music
was better.(in my humble opinion)
