Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Peter Gabriel, U2 and Robbie's ex-mates in the Band, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson, helped make his long-awaited 1987 solo debut a triumph. But mostly it was the superb set of songs: Hell's Half Acre; Broken Arrow; Sonny Got Caught in the Moonlight, and more.

Lightning does strike twice. Robbie Robertson's breathtaking 1987 solo debut was every bit as remarkable as another debut he'd masterminded two decades before, The Band's Music from Big Pink. Even more impressive was the fact that Robertson's new sound owed so little, other than a shared vision, to the sonic Americana he'd created with The Band. Robertson cashed in The Band's rustic tones in for a lush, beat-box womb created by coproducer Daniel Lanois. His own weird, almost spectral voice, also turned out to be the right vehicle for the words he'd been handing to others for so long. Bono, The BoDeans, and Peter Gabriel join in on keepers like "Fallen Angel" and "Broken Arrow." --Michael Ruby

The first track "Fallen Angel" sounds a lot like something by Peter Gabriel, who actually is one of the musicians/singers on the album. At the same time there's a lot of Daniel Lanois in the sounds. One of the best tracks of the album. Fine playing by drummer Manu Katché.
Other great tracks are "Broken Arrow" (with Terry Bozzio, Abraham Laboriel and Gabriel), "American Roulette" (about Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, the American dream and a lost generation), "Somewhere Down the Crazy River" (great lyrics, arrangement and performance, with the magic of Daniel Lanois), "Hell's Half Acre" (a rough anti-war song), "Sonny Got Caught In The Moonlight" (with Rick Danko on second voice).
I'd say that only a couple tracks are less than great. Even these are interesting as the band in these two is U2 (with the addition of maestro Gil Evans' Horn Section in the last one). If these two tracks were as good as the rest, it should have been five stars...
This is a collection of time-less recordings, sounding as great today and they did 25 years ago. Unique in style, it would be a real dis-service to attempt to place into any particular genre. Touches of many genres, but is still truly a unique sound (and feel), and that is why I think this is one of the greatest albums of all time.
A first solo Album. Produced by Daniel Lanois, I think. Awesome Musicians.
Of the rock species. It's so classic it's hard review.
Broken Arrow, Somewhere Down the Crazy River, were the singles.
It's beautiful, moving, powerfully spiritual timeless Rock music. I loved it on the first hearing. I didn't know who Robbie was then, though I'd heard of the The Band. If you're looking at this album, you got to this page somehow. If someone said it was good believe them. If you like rock with a bit of meat to it, its worth it. That's my opinion. I, obviously, just bought it again and I think this might be my 3rd or 4th copy.
Robbie's native American heritage in fused with gritty soul, powerful bass lines and great guitar rifts all throughout the album. The songs make you think, give you a nice warm picture
in your mind. For me, the most kick-ass R&R songs are Sweet Fire of Love (with U2), American Roulette (a true commentary about Elvis, Marilyn and the toll the country can do to you), Hell's Half Acre
(the best Vietnam song since Goodnight Saigon by Billy Joel), and the totally kick ass "Testimony" with U2. From 1987, give it a spin, you'll like it, it's good.

そこから逆にザ・バンドを聴き直し、いまではこの洗練されたアルバムより、泥臭いものの方が好きになりました。そういう意味で傑作です。
