I was disheartened when Joe left the James Gang, but of course he went on to other things. To this day I still consider this album one of his greatest achievements.
When they first issued the CD it was missing their version of Ravel’s Bolero, one of my favorites. I was disappointed and later read somewhere that there was some kind of copyright squabble over the use of the song. This version has restored Bolero on it, so I had to buy it again.
If you’ve never owned this and love classic rock, you need to add this to your collection.
First off, Rides Again by the James Gang is a primo example of what rock music can accomplish when you have all the right creative juices flowing and a variety of influences in evidence. It also shows you what a young Joe Walsh was capable of. The fluidity of guitar riffs and delay cleverly interspersed with homegrown acoustic embellishments. It is in this balance that makes this album so worthwhile to listen to. If you listen to "Funk #49" to "Closet Queen" with it's extended passages, you will find inspired and novel rock music on the level of the very best that time period could offer. I am inclined to say that some of this was jagged and raw rock. But, that really isn't true. The construction was a concerted effort and it shows.
We then move on to the more melodic offerings and tempo beginning with "Tend My Garden" to the ominous opus of "Ashes, The Rain, And I". This music moves from a bit of this, to a bit of that. Most of it acoustic- and wonderous as well. What still strikes me, after such a long time, is that each track is so extraodinarily listenable. The melodies, the changes all work together in some magikal way. I have asked my guides about this. What makes it all gel so well? They ignore me and put my picture on a dart board anyway. Gaining respect is a treacherous road indeed!
In closing, if anyone doubts the ability of Joe Walsh, let me say that I was fortunate to have seen the James Gang live throughout this time. Yes. He played the guitar equal to, if not better, than you hear here. A great concert and a great album. This is a fine addition to any classic rock collection. There are so many out there- And I will do my best to review (or wreck) all of them. It depends on your point of view. Thankfully, my fan base is strong these days! :)
Thanks for reading my review. I hope you enjoyed it. If not, I'll only write another one......

9. Ashes The Rain And I は弦楽を導入した大作です。タイトなスケジュールで、これらの制作をスタジオ・ライブのような形でつくっていった、とライナーに書いてあります。
現行盤は9曲です。
