”Words and Music” certainly ranks as one of my favorite and most frequently played albums. Each of the two CDs runs well over 60 minutes in length. The songs don’t appear to be arranged in any particular order. All are digitally remastered, and many of the songs are longer album versions.
Disc 1 runs to over 70 minutes, and starts right off with a pair of Mellencamp’s best-known and most popular songs: “Walk Tall” and “Pink Houses.” The 19 tracks on this disc also include the iconic “heartland” rocker’s songs, “Lonely Ol’ Night,” “Rain on the Scarecrow,” and “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A (A Salute to 60s Rock).”
Disc 2 also runs to over 70 minutes. It picks right up where Disc 1 ends; and nearly equals the initial disc in strength. Here can be heard Mellencamp’s classic “I Need a Lover,” “Hurts So Good, “ “Jack and Diane,” and 15 other rock masterworks.
As strong as the line-up of songs on “Words and Music” is, this album is also technically brilliant. The entire album has been digitally remastered, and the results are positively stunning. The audio is crisp and clear; all frequencies - the highs of John Mellencamp, Larry Crane and Mike Wanchic’s fierce guitars, the deep pulsating "thrum" of John Gunnell and Toby Myers’s bass, and the relentless tattoo of Kenny Aronoff’s drums - can be heard clearly and distinctly. The reproduction of Mellencamp’s vocals is especially noteworthy.
John Mellencamp’s “Words and Music” is a prime example of what was once called “heartland rock,” and now more commonly known as “classic rock.” It is sheer rock and roll entertainment from start to finish. I think it's probably the best collection of John Mellencamp’s greatest songs, masterfully performed and brilliantly engineered. A must-own for any Mellencamp and classic rock fan.
Anyway, this 2-CD set contains all of his music. So whether you like the old, the new, or both, you will be completely pleased. You will also likely be surprised when you remember just how much you love JCM's music and how many words you know.
Fill in the blanks:
I was born in a small town
Probably ___ ___ ___ in a small town...
or
Yeah, life goes on
Long after the _____ ___ ____ is gone...
or
Outside the club the Cherry Bomb
Our hearts ____ ______ _______, say yeah yeah yea,
Say yeah yeah yeah...
See, bet you haven't though of those in years!
And you can hear it all here in one place!
While he may not have enjoyed the global success of Bruce or Bob, what this compilation does is provide the case for an overdue re-evaluation of his contribution to Americana over the years, together with a band that has seen changes over the years but not suffered in the process. From his early street rocker stance when his name was John Cougar (especially on American Fool), through committed blue collar observer (almost making the case for being the Woody Guthrie of rock 'n' roll in the 1980s with his trilogy of Scarecrow, The Lonesome Jubilee and Big Daddy) and the great experiments of the 1990s onwards (Mr Happy Go Lucky from 1995 and the "roots" "Trouble no more" being personal favourites). In all there is plenty to savour especially at a time when most such other heroes would have run out of ideas and simply have a foot on the cruise pedal or as in the case of Seger just gone sailing!.
Each CD kicks off with a new unreleased song that sets the scene for all that follows with a cross section of tracks from all John's CDs released and with the emphasis on variety and a great running order, which when combined with the bous DVD makes this one of the great value buys of 2004.
