Sloppy in conception, and even sometimes in the playing, Let It Be often gets a bad rap. Unfairly, as it's often as charming, well written, and (oh yeah) rocking as the Beatles' "better" albums; it's also more outright fun than Abbey Road, the masterpiece it followed into the stores. With Lennon and McCartney working together on the perfect "I've Got a Feeling," "Two of Us," and "Dig a Pony," it's hard to believe these guys were about to implode. --Rickey Wright

Although it ultimately didn't work to salvage the band, it is a remarkable work of art in it's own right and probably laid the foundation for their final, and what many consider to be their finest, album, "Abbey Road".
It still surprises many people when they hear that "Let It Be" was actually recorded before "Abbey Road". It is somewhat surprising to realize the contrasting sounds of the two albums are due, in large part, to the band's efforts to sound raw and live with "Let It Be" and their apparent acceptance that they wanted to end with a smoothly-engineered masterpiece such as "Abbey Road".
But getting back to "Let It Be", it is widely known and acknowledged that John, with the agreement of the band, wanted that raw, live sound to dominate the album. This led to the "rooftop" concert. It is a testament to the talent of the individuals involved that they could sound so cohesive and play so well in the cold and damp of those rooftop recordings. "Get Back", "Don't Let Me Down" (not included on this disk), "I've Got A Feeling", "One After Nine-O-Nine", "I Dig A Pony" all were played during this concert and much of the recorded material was mixed into the final versions released on the album.
In watching the film recorded of the band in the studio, those sessions were very loose and off-the-cuff, incorporating covers of old rock tunes; some Beatles tunes, some other covers. None of the arguing reported during the recording of the "White Album" was evident, but there were glimpses of friction or tension in some of the scenes on film. Overall, it appears that they are either having some fun or bored stiff, with little in between.
All of this relates to the sound of the album in that there are diverse directions in this collection of what amounted to over 30 hours of tape that sat for months, waiting to be edited. And while some of the material does sound raw and live, Phil Spector's handling of much of the material ended up making it sound polished and engineered. Not that either one, in itself, is a bad thing, but it speaks to the dysfunction that was going on in the band at that time. Paul has been quoted as saying that he didn't care for the orchestration of "Long And Winding Road", despite the fact that it may have been the biggest hit from the album. Some younger people might be able to relate the wishes and problems that the Beatles had with the sound of the album to the way Kurt Cobain felt about "Nevermind"; which he felt wasn't raw enough and was over-engineered, too polished.
Having said all that, it is actually my opinion that the diversity of the album is a perfect union of the talent involved and the divergent attitudes of the individuals. From the rawness of "I've Got A Feeling" to the polished beauty of the title cut "Let It Be", this album and the project surrounding it became the last public glimpse of what many people consider the greatest rock band ever.
