The CD is a great collection of the Who's songs. It contains everything but Slip Kick.

Didn't realize I'm not fond of their kind of music. Was just trying to get some music for a road trip and new they were a 70s band, so I ordered it. I'll end of giving away as a gift I guess.

good selection of songs

Arrived on time, well packaged, excellent song mix, 2 CD's.. Had the good fortune to see them at the Hollywood Bowl --- one of them ( I think the drummer ) flipped off the stage into the pond in front of the stage -- which led to that water feature being covered and sealed ! ! If you like the Who -- this is a great compilation....

May 19th, 2013 was another milestone for rock legend, Peter Townshend. It was his 68th birthday. And the best way to celebrate is with a 2CD Collection called: "THE WHO: THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION!"
I remember buying vinyl LPs of "Meaty, Beaty, Big & Bouncy", "The Original Tommy", "Who's Next", and "Quadraphenia"...which was The Who's 2nd rock opera and the first time the band attempted surround sound. "Quadraphenia" offered new genuine 4-track music to play through all 4-Speakers of a home stereo system. If you bought the 2-Lps like I did, you already know if this audio experiment worked. The one thing that bothered me about "Meaty, Beaty, Big & Bouncy" was that many of tunes sounded odd. Having 14 songs on one LP was a big deal back in the 1970s. Still...I got the impression very little was done to clean the tracks up. "M.B.B.B" was a rush job!
Fast forward to "THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION"...there are 35 complete tracks and all of them conjure up plenty of memories. Working at various radio stations throughout the late 60s, 70s and 80s, I can't tell you the number of times I cued up the 45s to ""I Can't Explain", "Magic Bus" and "I Can See For Miles"...as well as the LP lengthier versions of "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Love Reign O'er Me!" [Progressive FM Rock Stations didn't adhere to the 3.5 minute rules that AM Music stations adhered to]. But I honestly don't remember these (and the 30 other songs) sounding as good as they do? Digitally they've been cleaned up and sound incredible (courtesy of TechnoWizard, John Astley). The detailed booklet that comes with the 2-CDs has plenty of 'session stories' and information about the artists themselves.
Ironically there are only 2 songs in this package that are not composed by Peter Townshend. These are John Entwistle's "My Wife" and the live version of Eddie Cochrane's "Summertime Blues!" The rest is pure Peter Townshend. So I'd like to wish him a Happy 68th Birthday and a personal wish for at least 30 more!

When I was sixteen I bought a vinyl album of The Who called Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy. That was the greatest rock and roll album ever! When CD's came in I was really frustrated because you couldn't find a Who CD anywhere with the classics I loved on that first great vinyl album. Some of those lost classics are back at last, finally available on this amazing double CD package. I'm talking about songs like
BORIS THE SPIDER, the great John Entwistle song about a horrible, disgusting insect that's crawling everywhere and suddenly seems as helpless and human as the man who hunts him down.
PICTURES OF LILY, the daring song about teenage masturbation that made me feel better about myself and . . . well, you know.
I'M A BOY which was such a great song to listen to being a boy and not having any idea how to feel good about it. (See above)
THE SEEKER One of those hippy classics about trying to find the meaning of life. Only this one rocks like a son of a gun!
MAGIC BUS One of my all time Who favorites, no frills rock and roll with psychedelic lyrics about a magical bus.
I CAN SEE FOR MILES The Who's first top ten hit in America, I can remember hearing it as a four year old in 1967.
ANYWAY ANYHOW ANYWHERE When I was a teenager I was a pitiful nerd afraid of his own shadow. But when this song was playing I felt like the king of the world!
A LEGAL MATTER Like a Rolling Stones song, except Pete Townsend makes it clear this womanizer is genuinely out of control and really doesn't like himself very much. But still full of mean, bad-ass attitude, especially the spoken epilogue over the fade: "Just want to keep doing all the dirty little things I do/Not work all day in an office just to bring my money back to you!/Sorry, baby . . ." Wow!!!

Rarely is there a Best of or a Greatest hits that doesn't exclude a song or two that leaves the person that bought it scratching their head in wonder or stomping their foot in frustration. Comprising a greatest hits for a band as prolific as The Who is by no means a easy task even if it is a two disc compilation. There are many reasons for this & the primary one is time constraints. Then you have the problem to solve should you go by record sales or fan favorites? Then you have to ask yourself do these songs really represent what the band was all about. Did we capture the energy of the band ?, did we forget any anthems or songs of critical import showing where the band made a quantum leap or a change in direction? Did we miss any songs of social import , did we capture the bands sense of humor? Or simply did we get the best of the best that this band contributed to the world of Rock & Roll or did we fail them? All I can say to the people that put this CD together is " Congratulations, on a job well done!!!" No filler all killer a superb representation of The Who & one of the best greatest hits ever compiled for any band, you did the boys right!!! I recommend this CD to old time hard core The Who fans & strongly recommend this to younger Rock & Roll fans that are not as familiar with the band for inside this CD are some of the greatest songs the world of Rock & Roll has ever heard.
