Editorial Reviews
Product Description
The R. Crumb-adorned classic, with the unreleased session outtake Flower in the Sun and two unreleased live tracks from the Grande Ballroom, Catch Me Daddy and Magic of Love .
Amazon.com
One of the most eagerly awaited albums in rock history, Big Brother & the Holding Company's 1968 major label debut (they'd previously released one thinly produced collection on the small Mainstream label) made good on all the hype generated by Janis Joplin's amazing performance at the Monterey Pop Festival the year before. Crowned by its hit single, a churning remake of Aretha Franklin's sister Erma's "Piece of My Heart," the album also contained Joplin's Monterey showstopper, Big Mama Thornton's "Ball and Chain," as well as the Gershwin classic "Summertime," on which Joplin's always underappreciated band (especially guitarists Sam Andrews and James Gurley) match her vocal intensity with their own ferocious playing. This expanded reissue includes two previously unissued outtakes ("Roadblock" and "Flower in the Sun") and a couple of heretofore unheard live cuts ("Catch Me Daddy" and "Magic of Love"), all from 1968. --Billy Altman

Love me some Janis Joplin!
The first seven tracks are just as I remembered them, including my two all-time favorite Janis Joplin songs: Summertime and Piece of My Heart. Her treatment of Summertime knocks me over every time I hear it.
This re-release includes four more tracks, two studio recordings and two live tracks. They're OK and more is definitely better. For me, the best part about these bonus tracks is the closing of the final track where the venue's promoter lists some of the acts who will be there in the next few days: Blood Sweat and Tears, The Who, The Electric Prunes, The Grateful Dead, The Animals, and then the dialog trails off.
I guess a word of advice is in order: If you've already heard this album and know you like it, then this is a great place to buy it. If it's new to you, search youtube and listen to a few of the tracks in their entirety. This album is rough and gritty. I is a completely accurate snapshot of the times, but that's pretty messy. Make sure you know what you're getting into before you plunk down your money. But if you already know you like it, go for it, because this album truly is a piece of American music history. And Summertime should move you no matter what!
