It’s getting difficult to find his CDs. Very happy I found this one.
Leon is one of those artist's I catagorize as "experience" musicians. Many rock artist coming out of the 60's fall in this category of mine for me. They seem to be as interested/concerned about the experience created from and surrounding there music as the music itself. Other stand out examples within this category are, The Grateful Dead and Hendrix.
If your my age, past the half century mark, and remember those days and enjoyed the intensity and character of Leon on his Leon Live recording, buy this CD. It sounds better (I wish somebody would remaster Leon Live) and is little more layed back and easier to keep up with these days.
I decided to buy it because I have been reading so much lately on how influential Leon Russell is/was to a lot of rock and roll bands both through his work as a Wrecking Crew member, song writer and touring musician. I didn't know any of this when I heard it back in the 70s after seeing "Mad Dogs and Englishmen", just thought it was great music and song writing and he was so cool with the top hat, glasses and long hair. My favorites are "Stranger in a Strange Land" and "Of Thee I Sing" because while there's a message its wrapped up in Russell's superb piano playing, distinctive voice. With the Shelter People it takes on the flavor of a gospel choir. This is the Leon Russell album to have even if you don't acquire anything else.
I would describe this album as gospel rock with an okie blues twist.
Leon eventually produced and played on sessions with Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Ike and Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, The Ventures, Bobby Darin, Wayne Newton, Sam Cooke, Johnny Mathis and many records with Herb Albert and Tijuana Brass.
Leon can be heard playing piano on Jan and Dean's "Surf City," Bobby Boris Pickett's "Monster Mash LP," and The Beach Boys "California Girls" and "Pet Sounds" among others. Leon played on most of Phil Spector's landmark records. According to Jack Nitzsche, noted producer, writer and arranger, "Leon was there for the solos and the fancy stuff," Jack was the band leader for those sessions. You name it, he can play it.
This CD was his second release "on his own" and The Shelter People were, in my opinion, the best group of backing artists he ever played and traveled with. Buy it, you'll enjoy it!

I owned the LP back in the early 70's and after Leon passed away I started looking for his music.

King ?... D'avoir orchestré la tournée "Mad dogs and Englishmen" de Joe Cocker en 1970 puis d'avoir illuminé le "Concert for the Bangla Desh" en 1971 avec George Harrison, Dylan, Clapton, Billy Preston, etc... ?
