During the '80s, Texas singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith graduated from modest folk celebrity to find herself signed to a major label and making thoughtful, better-heeled studio albums that were critical favorites but commercial anomalies in the country market where she was initially positioned. This 1993 project finds her returning to her roots, reunited with the producer behind his earlier folk triumphs, Jim Rooney. Taking its title from Truman Capote's first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms is a gentle but whip-smart anthology of excellent songs from acknowledged masters (Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Woody Guthrie, the Carter Family, the Weavers, Gordon Lightfoot) and lesser-known but hardly less-skilled writers including Kate Wolf, Frank Christian, and Vince Bell. Griffith's clear-eyed vocals and unswerving intelligence are well served by members of her own band, augmented by vocal cameos from a roomful of fellow folk veterans including Prine, Arlo Guthrie, the Indigo Girls, and John Gorka, among others. --Sam Sutherland

I knew when I started reading the liner notes, that the liner notes alone were worth more than I paid for this CD. To quote Nanci Griffith: “Other Voices, Other Rooms” is the title of Truman Capote’s first novel, published in 1948. It marked a time of new voices in literature and coincided with a rebirth of interest in folk music with the added twist of focus on the singer/songwriter.” She continues with a good history of the resurgence of folk music, and tells about all of her friends and musicians anxious to contribute to this project.
I really feel that I stumbled on a treasure with this CD, and Cathy’s half price books delivered it in a very timely manner. Thanks to all involved!

This isn't a new album, but I just bought it in CD and it's so good it deserves attention. I bought it when it came out in 1993 but I wanted to play it in my car while I was driving and in 1993, that meant audiotape. And who plays audiotapes any more?
What strikes one first about the album is the generosity it shows. Griffith is a notable songwriter in her own stead but she uses this album to sing songs written by the best of her peers -Kate Wolf ("Across the Great Divide"), Townes Van Zandt ("Tecumseh Valley"), Bob Dylan ("Boots of Spanish Leather," which is heard also on her 2002 live album, Winter Marquee), John Prine ("Speed of the Sound of Loneliness," also on the live album), Tom Paxton, Woodie Guthrie, Janis Ian, Gordon Lightfoot, Malvina Reynolds "(Turn Around"), the 1870s "Are You Tired of Me Darling" which was recorded by the Carter sisters, and "Wimoweh," which closes the record and includes many of the guest performers from other songs. And that's the second way in which this album is generous: Bob Dylan plays harmonica on it, Arlo Guthrie sings harmony vocal on Van Zandt's "Tecumseh Valley," Iris DeMent sings harmony on one song and John Prine on his own song, Chet Atkins graces two cuts with his exquisite guitar, and Odetta takes the first verse on "Wimoweh," which comes across as a fitting close to an album of musical celebration.
This is very good music. It's made from the best materials -good songs, good performers -and it hasn't been gussied up with phony strings and synthesizer sound tracks.
I really love the songs on this album. "Night Rider's Lament," is one of my favorite songs to sing around the campfire when I go camping.
"Turn Around," was written by the late Malvina Reynolds. And before Nanci sang it, it used to be part of a Kodak ad on TV. I submitted Nanci's version of that song to my High School's "Senior Slide Show," and although they didn't like it, my Aunt used that very same version for her daughter's graduation slide show.
I actually saw Nanci in concert at the Kennedy center in 2001, 3 years after discovering her. It was worth the wait!
So go ahead and buy yourself a copy of this album. You will not be sorry.
