Released immediately following the elaborate Crossroads box set, Journeyman is EC's way of feigning humility while cranking out the blues for his attentive audience. Featuring the help of famous sidemen George Harrison, Phil Collins, Robert Cray, Chaka Khan, and David Sanborn, Journeyman is less a superstar romp than a moderate collection of songs tastefully produced and economically performed. Flashes of Clapton's lead work burst through while his singing remains modest. The cover of "Before You Accuse Me" is heartfelt and while Clapton may at this point be incapable of delivering the down and dirty power of jukejoint blues, he still manages to find a little bit o' soul among the pickings. --Rob O'Connor

As for the SHM version, having already owned the original CD for some years, I recently wanted to take a chance on the sound quality of this (pricey) SHM remaster. From prior experience I can tell you that the SHM factor alone, for the most part, almost always seems to impart a rather nice, warm and organic flavor to things, but it strikes me as a somewhat subtle effect overall, especially when you consider how much the price difference is with SHM imports on the whole. But, I find that when you combine the SHM disc with a reliably good remaster, the value is there - especially if, as in this case, it's the only way available (at the moment, anyway) to get a desireable disc like this one in remastered form. But, for the money, the larger difference may be the quality of the remaster itself, rather than just the fact that it's an SHM disc - but, OTOH, having an SHM version of a good remaster doesn't hurt, either. But, not really having a good idea yet of what to expect, I braced myself for the worst and compared the first track of the original with the remaster. At first, I was taken aback by how similar to each other they seemed to sound - there was absolutely no apparent difference to me tonally, at all. I did notice a slightly better sense of transparency of voices and instruments, but I had to focus a bit on the comparison to spot it reliably, at least in the beginning. Considering the cost, I was beginning to fret that I'd gotten burned, but, as the tracks progressed and I was better able to get my bearings, almost all at once I was able to perceive what has proven to me to be the defining difference: the dynamics were noticably different - especially toward the peaks. It wasn't that the dynamics "increased" in some unrealistic manner. It's just that by comparison, I was able to grasp for myself just how 'constrained' or 'blunted' the attacks were of the original CD that I'd been listening to all these years had in truth actually been. After many listenings since, subsequent comparisons have come to reward me with a more easily recognized, more dynamic, and more transparent presentation that I now outright prefer and even feel well justified in having pulled the trigger on, despite its cost. But, if you're wondering, I think this version is worth the extra scratch in my opinion, even if you have the original CD and you might be left wanting something more. Some Amazon sellers may occaisionally offer a better deal on it, though.
I've had the pleasure of listening to this album many times and it's one of Clapton's best, in my opinion. He has a range of musical styles, from blues to rock, and some acoustic guitar too. I've listened to the remastered CD and this LP just blows it out of the water. The dynamic range and clarity of these songs is greatly improved and the soundstage is really opened, giving the music a three-dimensional quality to the point where you can pick out individual instruments and the music plays as if you have a wall of sound in front of you like a concert, as opposed to being "trapped" in front of the speakers as you get with CD. If you listen to this album on CD or even worse with little cheap earbuds via MP3, you're missing out. Eric's voice has never been so clear, and there's all kinds of little details that I haven't heard before. And for $15 shipped or so, it's a great deal. I am usually wary of remasters as the dynamic range is compromised to make the album sound louder by default since most people listen to music on little tiny speakers/headphones, but this remaster is very good and retains the warmth and dynamic range of the original analog reel-to-reel tapes.
The downside with this set is that the 2nd LP seems to be warped in these sets. I got one set and the 2nd LP played, but was noticably warped. My replacement copy was the same. It isn't a huge deal, but I find it annoying that a sealed LP can be warped like that. Both copies were packaged very well so this is a factory issue.
That being said, the LP overall is a great pressing. The cover art is great to see on a big scale with the LP jacket compared to a CD, and it's a gatefold so you get more cover art and a lyric sheet.
In short: if you like this album or Eric's work in general, get this LP!
Standout tracks: Pretending, Bad Love, Anything For Love, Running on Faith, Before You Accuse Me
My only issue with this album is that the updated version of After Midnight was recorded during these sessions, and despite being one of his best recordings, was not included on this album.
This vinyl reissue is of good quality, although the packaging is just heavy cardstock paper and very flimsy, basically the same kind of packaging used for boxed movie theater candy. I would’ve liked to have seen a nice thick gatefold like the good old days, but I’m just glad this is reissued and widely available again after literal decades of being out of print.
