Though often praised as a songwriter, Jimmie Dale Gilmore mostly considers himself a "song lover." Thus it should come as no surprise that 10 of the baker's dozen songs on One Endless Night are covers. Nor should it surprise anyone that Gilmore's distinctive plaintive twang so effectively conveys his passion for these songs. On his first record in nearly four years, Gilmore looks to his fellow contemplative Texans to provide much of the material here: songs by Townes Van Zandt, Walter Hyatt, and Willis Alan Ramsey join a pair from fellow Flatlander Butch Hancock. Add to that songs by "outsiders" like John Hiatt, Jesse Winchester, the Grateful Dead (a lovely reading of "Ripple"), and even Kurt Weill (a spooky reading of "Mack the Knife"), and you get a sense of who Gilmore is as an artist: entrenched in country music, he also has an open and curious mind, a wandering spirit, and an affection for timeless melodies. Something tells me JDG doesn't get the respect he deserves in Nashville. Like a lot of Texas troubadors (Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, Joe Ely, Wayne Hancock), their music is actually BETTER than the stuff that comes out of Nashville these days. Maybe it's not quite the "new country sound" that the radio programmers are always looking for. I've heard a few of JDG's tunes over the years, but never owned any of his discs. I knew he was always well regarded in the folk and 'alternative country' circles. This disc is amazing...his voice, to me, sounds like a cross between Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Roy Orbison. The slower, 'folkier' tunes blow me away, while the more uptempo ones are rockin' country tunes which keep the toes tappin'. Country fan or not, there is much to love about this disc.

Interesting song choices

Some very interesting songs that Gilmore chose to cover on this album, some of them delights and others a tad disappointing. You can never fault the voice; Gilmore's distinctive vocals shine throughout this album. But a couple of the arrangements were either too languid or jarring for my tastes. One example is the great Jesse Winchester song, "Defying Gravity." The original was great, and Jimmy Buffett also did a fantastic version back in the 70s, but Gilmore's take on this song just didn't click with me. Okay, I'm nitpicking at this point; most of these tracks are very pleasing. You have well-known tunes such as "Ripple" and "Mack the Knife" along more obscure tunes from singer-songwriters such as Willis Alan Ramsey and the late Walter Hyatt. There are many guest artists on this album --- Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller (the album's producer), Darrell Scott, Jim Lauderdale, Victoria Williams --- but they never get in the way or overpower any of these tunes. It's all tasteful, the songs radiating a comfortable warmth. Fans of Gilmore and the Flatlanders should like this one a lot.

I have an amazon parrot named Rocky. When I play Jimmie Dale's "One Endless Night" CD, Rocky stops dead in his tracks and listens fixated, like I do. This is an EXCELLENT album. I never heard of JD before but Amazon.com pushed a recommendation to me and I tried it. I will buy the rest of Jimmies albums as a result.
I work in a place you could call cubicle city. You have to listen to music with head phones so as not to bother your fellow cubicle prisoners. I have been asked by people 5 cublicles away to stop humming. I'm sure I will hear something official from HR about not humming. You can not help but sing along and foot tap with this album. Good job, Jimmie!

This CD is just good, but with all the great music in the world, I'm sorry I bought this one. I bought it with the other reviewers' statements that this was the return to the styles of After Awhile and Spinning Around the Sun, but though it is fortunately nothing like Braver New World, it's nowhere close to the quality of those first two. I love both the spare arrangement of After Awhile and the lush, drugged arrangements of Spinning, but One Endless Night fails to really distinguish itself from lots of other country/folk with solid, quality musicianship. Throughout my first listens to One Endless Night, I kept waiting for Gilmore's voice to push past its beautiful distinctiveness into the kind of elastic keenings and embraces it's capable of at its most powerful. I have come to love the darkened warmth of that voice that can suddenly whip you into a ghost world of rocks and standing demons, push you into harrowing areas of emotional discomfort and wells of trembling grief, only to set you back down home as it passes with an ironic smile. We usually come away from a listen to Gilmore a little wiser and happier, but this time it was just nice. Gilmore seems to be the kind of artist that's better when he's more selfish than what his seemingly genuine humility allowed him to be on this CD. He needs to take over, because he's a really abnormally great vocalist, there's a whole wilderness of love and canyons and loss in that voice, and something this tame was really disappointing.
By the way, I saw Gilmore live about five years ago with a then-19 year old guitarist named (?) Rhodes. That Rhodes kid was amazing. If anyone knows anything about what he's been doing and if he has any recordings available, I'd appreciate an email.

Before country music became all about the Dixie Chicks, Shania Twain and Garth Brooks (quality performers all ... if you think quality and unit sales amount to the same thing), it used to be called Country & Western music.

This terrific collection of songs performed with heartfelt honesty and effortless grace by Jimmie Dale Gilmore harkens back to the now-missing second portion of that musical equation. If you like your songs superlative, your arrangements simple and your singers sincere, you're a candidate for being wowed by this throwback artist, whose nasal twang and obvious earnestness just might be able to cure even the most hidebound cynic. "Ripple" and the title cut are the best of a stellar bunch.

This is undoubtedly Jimmie Dale Gilmore's best album. His voice is an acquired taste, but once acquired, remains with you. How anyone can think 'Mac the Knife' is 'dreary' is incomprehensible - it's the stand out track here and is used to stunning effect in the film 'A Prophet'. This is a great record - as long as you like the unique sound of Gilmore's voice, and not everyone does.

This is a great CD. A terrific selection of songs that showcase Jimmie Dale's voice well. The title track is written by Jimmie and poignant and enjoyable. His version of Grateful Dead's 'Ripple' is excellent and just sit back and enjoy 'Mack the Knife'. Jimmie Dale Gilmore is showcased on this album as much more than just a country singer.
