Editorial Reviews
A 4-CD soundtrack recounting one of the most incredible nights in the Grateful Dead's Long Strange Trip, and in the life of Winterland, the now-fabled room that, under the direction of legendary promoter Bill Graham, reigned as San Francisco's ultimate rock destination from 1967-1978. No other act was more closely associated with Winterland than the Dead. When the decision to shut the venue was made, a New Year's Eve blow-out with the Grateful Dead seemed the only way to go. This magnificent send-off to one of rock's most famous stages is now available on CD for the very first time.

The Grateful Dead were at times less than their best at big events with lots of people. The last shows at Winterland fit the special occasion category but the Dead played a long and consistently excellent show.
The 4 cd show is full of highlights. Great songs, great playing, and great sound. it is the sort of recording where the sound has density and texture. There are lots of Power cords and Phil Bombs, This is a a consistently high energy show and the playing gets stronger on each disc. The fourth cd is one long jam followed by the a Capella nugget, "And We Bid You good night". , which for me is a nice send off to their fans and friends. "And thank you, for a real good time."
All this to say, of all the concerts and live CDs I've heard by the Dead over the years, this one stands out for me as one of their best. That time was also a stand-out period for The Jerry Garcia Band, whose " Cats under the Stars " features the voices of Donna Godchaux and Maria Muldaur, as well as a number of songs that became standard tunes for later Dead shows. In addition to " The Arista Years ," I recommend this as one of the best examples of the best period of Grateful Dead music.
