Editorial Reviews
24 Bit Digitally Remastered. Double CD - Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II, also known as More Bob Dylan Greatest Hits, is the second compilation album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on November 17, 1971 by Columbia Records. With Dylan not expected to release any new material for an extended period of time, CBS Records president Clive Davis proposed issuing a double LP compilation of older material. Dylan agreed, compiling it himself and suggesting that the package include a full side of unreleased tracks from his archives. After submitting a set of excerpts from the The Basement Tapes that Davis found unsatisfactory, Dylan returned to the studio in September 1971 to recut several Basement songs, with Happy Traum providing backup. The final package included one previously uncollected single, "Watching the River Flow", an outtake from the same sessions, "When I Paint My Masterpiece"; one song from Dylan's April 12, 1963 Town Hall concert, "Tomorrow Is a Long Time", and three songs from the September sessions, "I Shall Be Released", "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere", and "Down in the Flood". The remaining tracks were drawn from existing releases. As with the Beatles' 1962-1966 and The Basement Tapes, all the selections could fit on a single 80-minute CD, but were nevertheless released on two CDs to match the LP.

If this is some compilation then you'll agree. A wonderful mix of later Dylan songs as well as old favorites plus a few extras thrown in to make a great double disc compilation. If you love the first volume, you will twice as love this one too.
Other songs Bob did from the 1971 sessions is a remake of "Only A Hobo", which you can find on "The Bootleg Series Vol. 10", "George Jackson", found on "Side Tracks", and "Spanish Is The Loving Tongue" found on "Pure Dylan".
As far as the hits go I would call this compilation semi-complete (with others included on volume 1) - but there are still three songs I wish could have been included on this: "Boots Of Spanish Leather", "Chimes Of Freedom" & "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" - these are favorites of mine - but I can always grab the individual albums to listen to those! Other great ones from Bob not included on a greatest hits compilation are "Desolation Row", "Ballad Of A Thin Man", "Highway 61 Revisited", "It Takes A Lot To Laugh" on the "Highway 61 Revisited" album and "Absolutely Sweet Marie", "Most Likely Go Your Way", "Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands" and "Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat" found on "Blonde On Blonde" - anybody who buys these G.H. compilations WILL eventually get those albums "or else be kept from drifting"!
But there are so many great Dylan tunes they would have to release about 6 or so volumes to get all of them in!
So I definitely recommend this to any new Dylan fan or a completest who wants to get everything!
I just listened to the stereo SACD layer, and I was admittedly a bit disappointed. Still, it's a great album, so I heard it all the way through. I switched over to the CD layer and skipped through, and the sound was very similar to the SACD layer.
Then I played the remastered Sony CD from a couple of years ago. It sounded awful compared to this SACD! So curiousity made me put on the original Columbia CD from the nineties, and that was unlistenable. Man, I can't believe I used to listen to that disc constantly. I guess my ears have improved with time.
The point is, these recordings aren't perfect, but Hoffman definitely nailed the mastering on this one. This is as good as it'll ever be - full frequency response, nice detail. There always seems to be one or two things in the mixes that bother me, but those annoyances are minimized in this edition. And again, the detail is staggering.
As a bonus, "Tomorrow Is Such A Long Time", which always faded up on the LP and subsequent CDs, now starts with Dylan telling the audience "This one's called Tomorrow Is Such A Long Time", which is a very cool bonus for a quickee live recording that's become an icon over the decades.
Buy this before it's gone, which will probably happen very soon.
