Product Description
EUROPE '72 contains 7 additional tracks, including a 30-minute Pigpen-led jam with "Good Lovin'" as the anchor, contrasted with a lilting "Looks Like Rain" (featuring some of Jerry Garcia's last-ever pedal steel guitar-playing with the Grateful Dead), and in its official debut, the long-sought-after performance of "The Stranger (Two Souls In Communion)."

This sprawling three-records-on-two-CDs set offers a healthy cross-section of material and finds the band honing even further its blend of musical languages. There are country-inflected boogies, blues rave-ups, passionate ballads, and, of course, the extended, adventurous jams that made them famous. Many of the Dead's best-loved tunes made their initial vinyl appearances here, including "He's Gone," "Jack Straw," "Brown-Eyed Women," "Ramble on Rose," and "Tennessee Jed"--most of which reveal a heavy country influence, especially in Robert Hunter's lyrics. In addition to introducing these new songs, Europe '72 also showcases brilliantly fine-tuned versions of "Truckin'" (complete with a lengthy "Epilogue") and "China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider," which became the first of the band's many magical song combinations. --Marc Greilsamer

The contents of this latest reissue is as initially intended in 1972 - devoid of any bonus material. This rests fine with me because a retouch job isn't necessary with a first-rate live album like this, except that David Glasser's terrific remix engineering has brought out brighter details in the music.
No matter what, I still struggle getting completely into "Prelude" after these many years. But it's certainly playable as it leads into that beautifully mellow "Morning Dew". What remains is front-loaded with great American music vividly captured in Europe. The Grateful Dead take everyone on a magical ride with a living, breathing kind of vibe.
Throughout "Europe '72", Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh are mining gold with their guitar/bass interplay. Not just that, the Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter songwriting partnership demonstrate that they were still on a hot streak. "Ramble On Rose" and "Brown-Eyed Woman" are so prime that I can't help but share these with my neighbors, whom I've never met.
Rhythm guitarist Bob Weir shines as well. There's his thorough reinvention of his composition, "Sugar Magnolia", into a revved up rocker. The Weir/Hunter "Jack Straw" is so wondrous, I simply refuse to believe it's ever existed. It's still my choice for greatest Fourth of July anthem ever recorded, along with Ray Charles's "America the Beautiful". Their vocal harmonies are as irresistible as it gets and newcomer Keith Godchaux rocks that piano.
There's a melancholy circling "Europe '72", for this would turn out to be Pigpen's swan song. His organ is often in the background, but it comes through nicely on "He's Gone". Most vitally, his cover of Elmore James's "Hurts Me Too" still exhibits his knack for blues harmonica and his vocal chops haven't abated in the least even as he was in declining health. And Jerry's guitar and solo is as impassioned and haunting from the first day I heard it. I wish I could isolate the vocal/harmonica/guitar on this cut. Truly a showstopper.
With this 50th edition, "Europe '72" should keep the flag flying high for the Dead. They continued mingling blues, folk, country, jazz and experimental music in their rock only with more refinement that would typify the early seventies. But their depth of feeling continued on this LP. And I love that decal sticker inside.
Maybe it comes with vinyl .
