Deluxe Edition Two CD set. Reissue of Steve Earle's 1988 album, Copperhead Road, a Country Music. The title song "Copperhead Road" (an actual location in Mountain City, Tennessee) tells of a Vietnam War veteran, scion of a rural moonshine bootlegging clan, who returns home to grow marijuana on his family's land (the song also inspired a popular line dance timed to the beat of the song). "Johnny Come Lately" (performed with the Pogues) compares the experience of US servicemen fighting in WWII with those in the Vietnam War, and contrasts the differing receptions they received on returning home. Many of the album's songs reflect Earle's politics.

After making the tragic error of listening to some of the "great" music from my high school and college days, and scratching my head wondering how I could have actually liked that crap, it was with enormous trepidation that I approached Copperhead Road. I was so relieved and excited to hear it again and find that it sounded better than it did back then. I wish Nashville had been listening back then instead of manufacturing bands to sing generic lyrics geared to appeal to people not quite bright enough to realize that Larry the Cable Guy is making fun of them.

Anyway, back when I first listened to this in high school I couldn't realize what agreat song writer and all around talent Steve Earle really was back then and is today. "Wow" is all I can say, and damn am I glad I took the chance to listen to this one again. It's nice to know I had a little good taste in music way back then, and it's good to know that Steve is still putting out great music. Bichen!

COPPERHEAD ROAD is the best album ever by Steve Earle, blending influences from such artists as Johnny Cash, the Charlie Daniels Band, Waylon Jennings, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Willie Nelson, the Marshall Tucker Band, Tompall Glaser, the Outlaws, Billy Joe Shaver, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Band, and the Allman Brothers Band circa BROTHERS AND SISTERS with a touch of alternative attitude, creating the best country-rock sound this side of the 70s Southern Rock boom. The songs on side one are a loose suite based on the experiences of Vietnam veterans during and after the war, with several lines in the title track being so cautionary about the dangers of going where you shouldn't be that they inspire me to look at pictures of pretty actresses as a deterrent against hanging out on the wrong side of the city where I currently live (Kingston, NY). Earle's belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes this an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

This two disc deluxe edition of the classic album Copperhead Road is first rate. It sounds very good. The packaging is standard, but sturdy. There is an informative booklet with a short essay on Steve Earle. I prefer the sleeve notes that don't take forever to get through. A lot of deluxe versions serve up a second album that is a collection of demos and b sides that seldom get played more than once, but not here. We get a 78 minute, 17 track live album. The first 11 tracks are previously unreleased from the 1987 Raleigh, North Carolina gig. So, if you still have your old one disc Copperhead Road this is well worth the upgrade.
