Neil Young's most dependable route has always been to head for the back roads. Country-flavored releases Harvest (1972), Comes a Time ('78), Harvest Moon ('92), and Silver & Gold ('00) are among the most commercially popular titles in a fitful career, which makes Old Ways something of a anomaly. Released in 1985 as the mid-title in a misbegotten five-LP stint with Geffen, it failed to exhibit the kind of roughhewn muscle of its more robust country cousins. With Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson making vocal contributions and a mix of longtime Young sidemen and Nashville cats laying down a bed of fiddles, steel guitar, and banjo, it would seem to be cruising right up Music City's main drag of the mid-'80s. But Young being Young, he goes around the bend with "Misfits," which summons an indelible image of space-station astronauts watching reruns of Muhammad Ali fights. It happens to be the most memorable number on Old Ways, which perhaps explains why those new fans never showed up and the old ones found other things to do for awhile. --Steven Stolder

That's all too bad, because "Old Ways" includes some great country songs that show an absolute mastery of the form. Stunning billowing harmonica opens the record like a cool breeze through an old willow tree. It's one of the most longing and lonely sounds Young has crafted. Flying Dutchman strings then punctuate the chorus. This track definitely sits comfortably beside Young's best covers. Then the the cattle prod comes out for "Back to the Country," to which only people with their feet encased in cement wouldn't dance to. Willie Nelson saddles up for the next number, "Are There Any More Real Cowboys," which could have easily played on any 1980s country station. And it's really fun to hear Nelson sing "not the one that's snortin' cocaine when the honky-tonks all closed" with utter conviction. Next, a classic country ballad, sung to a dream woman, slows down the pace and allows for a slow dance. Press her close, now.
Nearly every Young album contains some oddity, but "Old Ways" hides one of the classics: "Misfits" isn't really a country song... it's... umm... not a country song. Young sings of "space stations," "a see-thru' hooker" and "elephantine." It starts with a simple rhythmic thud and crescendos with strings and wailing voices that shower over the mix like distant fireworks. The song may have fit better on an album such as 1987's "Life," but here it definitely provides variety and color. It's probably one of his most underrated obscure songs. A live performance of "California Sunset," once the first song on side two, again boosts the mood with a fervent ode to the golden state. The crowd seems to agree. The title track exudes the classic sloppy and irresistible country sound that remains one of Young's most endearing trademarks. Young is definitely not set in his ways, apart from his defiance of record label demands. And one more country superstar joins Young on "Bound For Glory," another song which probably should have sat high on the country charts. Waylon Jennings and Young sing about passionate vagabonds on a mission and who were "bound for each other."
"Old ways" probably plays better today than in 1985 because Neil has made astonishing comebacks since those murky Geffen days. Some at the time felt his career was over. Far from it. It was just one more phase in a career that still remains undefinable. And though he recently sang that his "sales have tanked" he seems to keep going nonetheless. "Old Ways," though probably not for everyone, remains a testament to the fascinating career of a musician who seems to be able to pull off just about anything. When's the qawwali album?
