Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

When I hear that line about "broken windows, empty hallways, pale-dead moon and a sky streaked with grey, I think of Randy Newman as being sometimes underated in the music business but regarded as a unique specimen of the artist whose highly unusual and endearing talents especially are significant to his legions of fans. There are three compositions that Randy performs on this CD that could sell the CD if they were actually by themselves. First is "I Think It's Going To Rain Today" which is soft rock's answer to something like the poetic value of Dylan's Positively 4th Street, and Short People which clearly represents the satirical and highly irreverent qualities that Randy also exhibits in "I Love LA". The latter is accompanied on MTV with what I believe to be one of the most gonzo and in your face videos I have ever seen, alluding to the underbelly and seedier side of a big city that the right coasters have always considered to be Nirvana.Randy Newman is more than just a spectacled and classy middle age singer song writer who sits at a piano in smaller venues and does the best he can to entertain. Specifically, he's a genius who weaves poetry and angst and satire and even sometimes vindictiveness to his music. Ventura Boulevard-We love it! Buy this CD, you definitely will love it too.

I bought this CD because the version of the Toy Story song, "You Got a Friend In Me" was the full version with the backing band and not just Randy on his piano like in other collections. I didn't realise he wrote songs for other artists including "I Think it's Going to Rain Today" by Neil Diamond and "Mama Told Me Not to Come" by Three Dog Night. There is a 16 page booklet included with this collection. Thanks to Cousin Alex, my Spotify pal who got me into this guy's work. We always have Spotify listening sessions on the weekend and he found me this CD.

Don't think these get any air time now because of P.C. correctness .

Either you like the music or not... I like it. Regrettably the recording is a B-. Can't tell if it was in the master tapes or the CD pressing was just inferior. If you have a high end two channel system... you won't be pleased.

This is my first Randy Newman album, although I've been listening to him on soundtracks since the 80s - I just love his voice and lyrics.
My first memory of his voice is "I love to see you smile", from the 'Parenthood' soundtrack. If you haven't seen that, its a Steve Martin classic!

I just finished listening to this CD and I must say I was very impressed. I also have to say that I really was not a real RANDAY NEWMAN fan, not because he writes and plays bad music but I simply have not been exposed to a great amount of his music. Short People and Segments of Faust are about the sum extent of my previous exposure to his tunes. This means that he had a blank slate on which to paint and he did a very good job I must say. This compilation I think is fairly good in its coverage of his music...Yes it has Short People on it but it has also AVOIDED Faust on purpose I believe so that it may concentrate on other material far more worthy of this time limited disc ( there is only one, and a lot of material to go thru ). Randy Newman's Wry Wit and his ability to cast a word puzzle has got him in trouble before with "Short People" and it surely will again with " Redneck" from both the African American contingent of the American population and of course the REDNECK's after whom the song is written. I am sure that the average Redneck would not be able to catch the satire built into the song, nor have they been able to laugh at themselves in the past so why start now...Spigomars
