This landmark album was listed in the 100 top selling albums of the 70's. in 2003, Rolling Stone Magazine included this album in it's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". in 2006, the album was included in the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die". in 2007, the album was included in the list of "The Definitive 200 Albums of All Time" released by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sometime after the "2nd Folk Revival was pioneered by The Weavers, Joan and Zimmy, and then Donovan and Joni further bent it into the musical revolution of the latter 60's, a burgeoning British pop performer with four hit singles and two 1967 albums (one of them a top ten charter) contracted tuberculosis and spent two years in hospital and convalescing, all the while contemplating life and spirit. He studied meditation, metaphysics, yoga, and various religious holy books. This newly found spirituality led to a musical change in both lyrics and style for him and `Cat Stevens', the new folk phenomenon of the 70's was born. His two 1970 releases, MONA BONE JACKSON, and TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN became almost instant critical and commercial success stories, TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN became a gold record within 6 months of its release and a Billboard Top Ten seller (charting at #8). This new introspective folk-rock style had mass appeal to the audience on both sides of the Atlantic and Cat Stevens had now established a signature sound.
TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN is #206 on Rolling Stone Magazines list of the 500 greatest albums of all time! It is also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Finally, in 2007, it was also included in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's "Definitive 200 Albums of All Time".
So why all the accolades for this album over say, TEASER & THE FIRECAT, or, CATCH BULL AT FOUR? Again, it is simply a beautiful work of art. All of the songs immediately work their way into your head. They are simple and yet very deep. They depict a journey in terms of human conditions, the beginnings of Cat Stevens', and by extension our own, search for truth and light in a very dark world. This album is food for the soul and the spirit. It makes you feel, it may even make you think, but most importantly it makes you feel. The music is not ingrained in traditional folk, nor is it quite modern folk, yet it has all the best virtues of both worlds, in a sense, it is old and new. And having said that, this album has not aged a day, nor will it ever. It is timeless. This album is the Grimm's Fairy Tales of our time, we keep reading those and those who come after us will read those and listen to TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN.
To this day I usually claim that TEASER & THE FIRECAT is my favorite album of Cat's, however in a pinch I usually find myself tossing this one on more often and it is not purely out of habit. TEASER has elements which are more personal to me and when I am of a mood to really `listen' I will tend to the TEASER first, however... Like Donovan's GIFT FROM A FLOWER, the purity of TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN, the seductive outward simple-ness of what hides vast universes inside it, is what makes this album truly great. It has powerfully incredible sound for a two-track recording. The remaster of this achingly demonstrates the triumph of talent that was Cat Stevens, Alun Davies, and band. This is a guaranteed winner to anyone who buys it, one of those `desert island' albums that ends up on everyone's list of must-haves when the world blows up. Speaking of... when you listen to this album, you will find that Cat Stevens is indeed giving us a gift in contemplation of our enjoying it to full measure, before the world blows up.
So pick this flower and plant it in your garden.
Next, Cat is/was a great singer and arranger, who conveyed the song's meaning and feeling as only the writer could. Now for that, you need more than a smidgin of talent. His blend of solo playing, mixed judiciously with accompaniment, was suited just right for each song. The band comes in, and lays off, and plays just what they should and when they should. They were great musicians to boot. Cat set the standard and trends for the next 20 years.
Finally, you get the feeling Cat made this album with almost no concern about its commercial success. He simply wanted to share his songs with the world, and we were lucky that he had the talent, and that perhaps the musical world was in just the right condition, to allow him to actually achieve success in the process.
BTW, I agree with the writer who said that while Tea for the Tillerman's overall quality may not have been as high as Teaser and the Firecat, it hits the higher notes. Unfortunately each album's overall quality continued to slide, in the late 70's. Few people, perhaps only Dylan, could maintain this level of quality production for more than just a few albums. But Tea for the Tillerman was IT, people should never forget it, and it belongs in everyone's collection.
