Joe Walsh at his best

This was one of my favorite albums in the mid 1970s. I didn't have the recording for nearly 30 years until I finally found it in a used record shop. (The CD line up and the original record are identical--no new material, sadly.) Even though my taste has changed and I've moved more in the direction of jazz, I was rivoted by Joe Walsh's guitar playing and the tightness of this power trio.

The only disappointment might be the bass solo on "Lost Women," but it was the early 1970s, after all. Besides Jack Bruce, there weren't many electric bass virtuosos, and many of the techiques now taken for granted didn't exist. So, turn up the fuzz and play eighth notes!

As other reviewers have noted, Joe was in a unique grove. He derives the maximum feeling from his playing. He doesn't miss any notes and doesn't waste any notes. His tone and attack are perfect for this genre. His use of special effects--waw waw and echoplex--is perfect: very drammatic and not cloying or cheap (as was often the case at that time). The pure blues number is sweet, hot, and memorable. Joe could get more out of a half a dozen well placed notes than many shredders (such as Malmsteen) do in a hundred.

The drumming by Jim Foxx (I think that's his name) is energetic and driving. His solo on "Lost Woman" does not disappoint.

I wonder if Joe would ever consider tackling his power trio format again... I hope so. He didn't show this piercing side very often.

Amazing that only three musicians could make music that sounds this good and this full. Honestly, where were they hiding that fourth member?! Actually, that's the amazing Joe Walsh doubling up on guitar AND keyboards. Man, he's even more talented than I had thought. Plus, you have those distinctive vocals of his. The total package. I have to admit that I've been a fan of Joe Walsh and The James Gang for many, many years, but until earlier this year I had never thought to listen to this outstanding live album. Why didn't anyone tell me!? Needless to say, I'm very happy that I belatedly took the plunge and ordered this CD. This rocks and rolls and kicks and wails from start to finish. As another reviewer asked; where is the expanded version of this concert? There certainly HAS to be more in vaults where this splendid set came from.

Cover includes the "featuring Joe Walsh" tag, just as he was moving out the door to Barnstorm. A very good representation of the Gang's basic live set, regardless. Walsh pushed 'em into overdrive, yes, but this was a real band effort, shows filled to the brim with the give-and-take and nuance of a group of seasoned road warriors. If you were there, you know what I mean. If you weren't but ever wondered what the fuss was all about, this is a fine place to start. Four soaring stars and highly recommended.

Archetypal '70s rock at its best

I got this album at the time it first came out when I was a schoolboy and thought it was great. Recently I got the CD as part of the on-going LP to CD replacement program and now think it almost defines rock music of the era. Joe Walsh is good as electric guitarist, accoustic guitarist, organ player and song writer and Dale Peters (bass) and Jim Fox (drums) are pretty good too. The first six tracks work as solid, well constructed and well executed pieces. Lost Woman tends to degenerate into the self indulgant soloing that was typical of concerts of the time (it was almost obligatory for the drummer and bassist to take lengthy solos) but it's pretty good overall. Recommended to the rock connoisseur.

i have just one complaint, I want to hear these classic albums as they were not as someone thinks they should sound that probably wasn't even born when it was released. I refer to the fade out on lost woman, what are they thinking ? this is actually annoying and unless im in my car or in my workshop I will listen to the vinyl copy, which I normally do anyway, they sound better. but at least it was attempted, this was a rare album to find in the 70's and is my favorite james gang. I did see them live in 1974 with alice cooper.

I use to own this vinyl copy when I was 12. I was excited to get this music back. The sound quality on the live album is a B, but the songs are an A. Time flies by so fast when listening to these songs, especially while driving. The only song I think is dragged out is lost woman. I wish it was cut in half. The solos become a bit too long and too much to listen to. Other than that, a GREAT CHOICE, at a great price.
