Over the course of five mesmerizing CDs, Unearthed shows us just how Johnny Cash's now-legendary handful of recordings for American Records came to be. Four discs feature previously unreleased tracks from the famed Rick Rubin-produced sessions. Through their inconsistencies and quirks (and, more often than not, brilliance), they shed light on how Cash's final records were shaped, edited, and produced. Here we get some creative pairings: Fiona Apple providing guest vocals on Cat Stevens' "Father & Son," and the late Joe Strummer duetting with Cash on Bob Marley's "Redemption Song." Neither are the definitive statements that some of Cash's covers from this period are (his glorious takes on Nick Lowe and Danzig, to name just two), but they're still very much worth hearing. Most riveting are the numerous traditional numbers, the songs that were clearly closest to the Man in Black's heart. "Banks of the Ohio," Billy Joe Shaver's "Old Chunk of Coal," Stephen Foster's "Hard Times," and the entire disc of previously unreleased gospel tunes are powerful statements, tunes where you feel privileged to hear Cash--despite declining health and failing voice--sing one more time, the way he wanted. The last disc of this monumental set is a "best-of" compilation of tracks that did make it on the American individual discs, a reminder of just how groundbreaking these sessions were. Perhaps the biggest highlight in this awe-inspiring set is its vast liner notes, a loving collection of essays and recollections that highlight the history and stories behind this eclectic array of songs. --Jason Verlinde

I would recommend this collection to people who enjoy a master songwriter and performer.
But, if you are looking for a great primer on Johnny Cash, I would recommend my favorite album of his "The Legend of Johnny Cash" which covers everything from Cry, Cry, Cry to Jackson to Hurt.
If you are a big fan like I am with Johnny Cash as my favorite musician of all time, it's well worth getting.
Just know a lot of the tracks won't be played nearly as often as from Legend of Johnny Cash, Live as Folsom Prison, or American IV: The Man Comes Around my three favorite Johnny Cash album.
But I am glad I had a gift card to get it.

Johnny Cash a son apogée. Il n’y a rien à rajouter.
For example, there's an incredible version of The Devil's Right Hand, a song recorded by the Highwaymen in the mid-90s, but Cash's sparse version, accompanied only by an electric guitar, is by far the superior performance. Versions of Down the Line, I'm Movin' On and Carl Perkins' Everybody Wants to Be My Baby should have seen the light of day long before this set. And I'm particularly annoyed that the best song in this set - a duet between Johnny and June Carter Cash on a rewritten version of Cash's 1960s classic As Long as the Grass Shall Grow (with the lyrics redone to reflect the two's relationship) was never released until after both of them were gone. Cash called My Mother's Hymn Book, a collection of gospel recordings released here as Disc 4 (and later reissued as a standalone) his favorite album, so why weren't these released when he was alive?
I've heard sets of outtakes before where people take an "it is what is is" attitude and you're just thankful to have a few extra tracks to listen to even if they aren't very good. Unearthed is different because it shows even the outtakes were vibrant and album-worthy. Those who bought the recent vinyl box set of American I-VI have every right to be upset that Unearthed wasn't included.
In terms of the set itself my only complaint is the unnecessary 5th disc featuring previously released tracks from the first 4 American CDs (except for "Thirteen" which is actually a longer alternate take or edit than the version previously released). This set was expensive enough and considering anyone willing to shell out the money for this very likely already have American I-IV in their collection (not to mention the later V and VI), I found it was superfluous and unnecessary. Knowing that Rubin was holding back tracks for V and VI, so the inclusion of further outtakes was unlikely, I would have been more than pleased for Disc 5 to have featured the complete Viper Room show from which two tracks from American I were taken. But even if I had also purchased My Mother's Hymn Book as a standalone, the three other CDs are more than worth the money.
There is just one thing that I don't like but it's not related to the music itself: the design of the folder that holds the discs. If you have big fingers be careful because it can be foolishly riped or damaged since the "accordion" jackets to insert the discs don't "spread" or open as wide as you may think, so take this in consideration. Other than that the music, the sound and the book are great, and IMHO, totally worthy to get.
