Tuneful Once Upon a Time in the West has some wicked guitar playing, while Lady Writer adds zest to a mainly melancholic collection. News is an unheralded jewel of a song with mesmerizing lyrics and melody. Portobello Belle and Single-Handed Sailor are beautiful ballads. Angel of Mercy shows that DS can do Nashville and do it well. Although offbeat Communique and mysterious Follow Me Home take some getting used to, your patience will be rewarded. The haunting Where Do You Think You're Going is my all-time favorite DS song, but to gain a full appreciation of the song you should check out the live performances on YouTube, which include a passionate and extended outro. It's frustrating that the recorded version, while excellent, does not include the extended outro, nor does the song appear on any of their live albums.
Some complain that Communique is a re-hash of the first album. I think the songs are unique, although there do appear to be parallels (a sort of kinship)between songs of the two albums which I've listed below(just for fun):
Dire Straits album tracks and Communique album "sister songs"
Down to the Waterline and Single-Handed Sailor (nautical theme)
Water of Love and Communique (choppy tempo)
Setting Me Up and Angel of Mercy (country flavor)
Six Blade Knife and Where Do You Think You're Going (grim, threatening)
Southbound Again and Follow Me Home (heading my way)
Sultans of Swing and Lady Writer (lively, fast-paced)
Wild West End and Portobello Belle (streets of London)
In the Gallery and Once Upon a Time in the West (life's not fair)
Lions and News (angst)
Communique is the most unappreciated album of the most unappreciated band, but both will stand the test of time.
Notes: 1. Lady Writer was released as a single with Where Do You Think You're Going on the flip side. 2. The Money For Nothing "best-of" album includes a very good live rendition of Portobello Belle. The album also has Lady Writer and Where Do You Think You're Going, but for some unfathomable reason uses a different studio version of the latter that is good, but not as good as the Communique version. 3. Lady Writer sounds a lot like What's the Matter Baby, a real rocker co-authored by Mark and David Knopfler that only appears on the Live at the BBC album. 4. At a concert in Germany in 1980 MK dedicated News to the memory of John Lennon.
Every song is good and I recommend if you enjoy more soulful music.
Nevertheless, it contains, to some of us Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler fans, some of the most sublimely 'smooth' guitar work Mark Knopfler's ever done. Just listen, with eyes closed, to the first three songs. Effortless and graceful guitarwork interlaced with strong, tight rhythmic backing. This was still the original four piece group with just a touch of extras (listen for the organ in Where Do You Think You're Going?, and the outdoor sounds of crickets and the gentle surf in Follow Me Home).
I just finished listening to my new Warner Brothers 180 gram 'audiophile' LP recording for the second time since picking it up three days ago. I'll suggest one point of comparison for those who wish to compare CD versus LP (I have a 'SBM' [Super Bit Mapping] re-mastered Vertigo/ Mercury import CD to compare to the new vinyl record). When you get to the last cut on the disc -'Follow Me Home'- listen to the sounds of the crickets and then the surf. If you listen to the CD first, it will sound very natural as the 'SBM' re-master is very resolute and refined as CDs go. If you follow that with the vinyl record, you'll be looking for the crickets in your room, and the surf sounds will be soooo "wet" sounding compared to the CD. The "hiss" of the flowing water on the wet sand particles is incredibly life-like! Real life sounds that most all of us have heard and know what they REALLY sound like to us. The record, which is ANALOG, is reproduced completely as ANALOG all the way from the original ANALOG tapes from December 1978!
Hooray to those at Warner Brothers who are responsible for bringing us this wonderful series of Dire Straits' first four albums on beautifully produced 180 gram audiophile-quality vinyl discs!
It's SO EASY to give this recording FIVE STARS!!!!! My highest recommendation!!!!!
The music is not forced and the band almost got it perfect here. ( That in my opinion was achieved on their 4 studio album)
DS never really played to the gallery and it is very apparent on this one. An absolute cladsic and a must have.
And i said i dont need to speak about the music!!!
A word about the seller : simply put 5 star experience. I got a steal as this is an original pressing from 1979 and not a remaster. Mint condition. Arrived a dsy earlier than what amazon said. Get yourself a copy!!!
Heres my ranking of the DS albums:
6. On Every Street
5. Making Movies
4. Communique
3. Dire Straits
2. Brothers in Arms
1. Love over Gold

1.* Alchemy : simply the best live album ever. THIS is DS at their peak!!!! If you can find it : its worth its weight in gold! I have not been able to get it as an LP but had bootlegged cassettes , then owned the CDs in the 90s and now have the remastered DVD. Absolutely amazing DVD and i think u can get it here.
