Have a look at Rocco, this week's Pet of the Week at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. Rocco is an athletic middle-aged dog looking for a fresh start after his previous owner passed away. Rocco lived outdoors in his previous home and learned to be an enthusiastic ball-fetcher. He enjoys car rides and has experience playing with other dogs of all sizes.

He's met all kinds of people, but like most dogs who've spent most of their time outdoors in a yard, his "house manners" will likely need some development and polishing if he's going to become more of a "house dog." He's getting better at leashed walks and not jumping up, and continued positive reinforcement training as well as just more, managed, experience being indoors, will be important to help him develop his skills.

Rocci's low adoption fee is actually ALREADY PAID for Rocco, because he's been with the shelter for awhile, and the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation's "Leave No One Behind" fund steps in to sponsor adoption fees in these cases! So if you're looking for an active dog to either keep as a mostly-outside companion for you and possibly for another dog, OR you're interested in doing some positive training and socialization work so he can be a little more pampered as he enters his later life, please come and meet Rocco!

This Saturday from 11:00 to 3:00 they'll have several adoptable dogs and cats in the showroom at Santa Cruz Subaru to meet folks among the sparkly splendor of new cars! Thanks to  Subaru and the national ASPCA for their support - they provided a grant to help the Shelter pay for some of the costs to get pets ready for adoption during the month of October!

Finally, the Shelter has a Spooktacular Adoption Special happening this Friday through next Monday: All dogs, cats, and rabbits can be adopted for just $31!! Spay or neuter, vaccinations, and a microchip are all still included.
