Pet-O-Rama: February 3rd 2026

Pepper PLUS Training Available with All Adoptions AND Upcoming Spay/Neuter Clinics

Posted: Tuesday, February 3, 2026

Meet Pepper, this week's Pet-of-the-Week this year at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. She's a big, shaggy, beautiful best friend-to-be! Her previous family described her as an Old English Sheepdog mix, but the shelter's not sure how sure they were... The do know she's a big, sturdy 90 pounds, and she has a shaggy coat that WILL require regular grooming.

Pepper was surrendered to the shelter, because her previous guardian has medical issues that made caring for her difficult. Pepper was clearly very well-socialized, loved, and trained in her previous home - she rides well in a car, is sociable and friendly with everyone she meets, she plays well with toys, is quite manageable on leash in spite of her size, and she responds to quite a few training cues, like "sit," "stay," "heel," and "come." She lived in a home with teenagers previously and did well, but she may be a little too exuberant for small children or elderly folks, especially those unused to larger dogs. Her favorite things to do are play with toys, go to the beach, and go for walks and hikes. Her favorite toy in a previous home was a soccer-sized ball.

Training Available with All Adoptions
The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering "Pawsitivity Bucks" with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a fantastic way for adopters to connect with a certified local dog trainer and get their relationship with their new dog off to a great start! There is truly nothing better than a certified trainer to help folks understand how to communicate effectively and clearly with a new dog to build trust & teamwork and to provide mental stimulation for an active canine brain!

Upcoming Spay/Neuter Clinics
If you already have a pet, and they need "fixing" of the reproductive kind, the next affordable spay/neuter clinic, with friends from Animal Balance, is coming up February 20th, 21st and 22nd! Spots are filling up fast, but some spots are still - especially for cats and male dogs. The shelter host's 3 of these community clinics each year, with help from fantastic local volunteers, and they get 200 owned cats & dogs fixed, vaccinated & microchipped at each one. You can find a link to sign up at their website.

For more info, listen to Pet-O-Rama at 11am Thursdays here on the pig or visit the shelter, located at 1001 Rodriguez St. in Santa Cruz and open from 11am to 6pm every day.
