We've got an adorable, compact little pet lined up for this week's Pet of the Week at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. Georgina is  a very cute and sweet-natured adult rabbit. She has cool splotchy grey markings on her white coat, and a couple of longer tufts of hair and a short, slightly-rounded body and head-shape that may indicate that she's a "lionhead" mix. She was surrendered to the shelter along with two other rabbits when their landlord decided they couldn't have the rabbits anymore. In her previous home she got along well with the other rabbits, and they were kept mostly in outdoor hutches, but Georgina is far too sociable a bun for that lifestyle! She's really enjoyed living indoors while at the shelter and having plenty of snuggling and attention from the shelter's incredible rabbit volunteers.

The shelter always recommends that rabbits live indoors with their people. While some safe exercise time outdoors in a pesticide-free part of the yard or garden can be great enrichment, rabbits stay much healthier and safer when they are kept as indoor pets, and they make much more interesting pets that way, too - forming strong bonds with their people and showing off their widely-varied personalities. Rabbits can be litterbox trained and enjoy playing with a wide variety of toys, so they are very endearing, quiet pets. At six years old, Georgina is well into middle age, but rabbits will generally live to be 8-10 years old with good, indoor care and a healthy diet. Because of her age, her adoption fee is just $75!

There are other rabbits available at the shelter, as well as some Guinea pigs available for adoption right now, along with a wide variety of dogs and puppies and some cats. The shelter receives lots of folks asking about kittens right now...they are JUST around the corner - there are 7 families of kittens in foster homes right now, some with their mamas, and they'll start returning to the shelter to be made ready for adoption in the next two weeks or so. As with all of their dogs, cats and rabbits, spay or neuter, vaccinations and a microchip are always included with adoption, so choosing to adopt from a shelter is ALWAYS and amazingly cost-effective way to bring a pet into your family, and wetheyalways have a diverse selection of pets available.
