Pet-O-Rama: Week of May 25th 2026Lola!
Posted: Wednesday, May 27, 2026
Have a look at Loa, this week's Pet of the Week at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. She's a three-year-old, beautiful and active shepherd, came to the shelter after a landlord changed their pet policy. \For more info, AND to find out about upcoming shelter events and fundraisers, check out the full post, listen to Pet-O-Rama at 11am Thursdays here on the pig or visit the shelter, located at 1001 Rodriguez St. in Santa Cruz and open from 11am to 6pm every day. At the shelter, she's played readily with some dogs, but she's also shown some selectivity, so they recommend a structured introduction here at the shelter if you already have a dog. She was indoor-outdoor previously, sleeping indoors at night. She is house trained and lets you know when she has to go out, although anyone who adopts should expect to do a little bit of remedial house-training while a pet gets used to a new environment, new schedules, and a new lifestyle. She walks well on a harness and she loves to play fetch and retrieve her ball. She's been sociable and easy to handle by staff and volunteers, and she'll thrive with an active adopter who can provide her with some daily mental and physical exercise. The shelter doesn't know her actual breeding heritage, but she appears to be, and acts a lot like, a Belgian Tervuren - one of the 4 types of Belgian shepherds: there are Tervuren, Malinois, Groenendael, and Laekenois. AND theSanta Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation "Pawsitivity Bucks" program, which provides a $200 training voucher for every dog adopted, will help Lola's adopter figure out what really motivates her, how to exercise her well, and how to communicate well with her in a new home through positive reinforcement training, no matter WHAT is in her genetics!
