Here's Dembele, this week's Pet of the Week at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. She's a 4 month old, female, tan and black shepherd / hound mix and a sweet-natured pup who came to our shelter with her team of 4 littermates and an older pup. With Belgian Malinois and Catahoula Leopard Hound parents, this accidental litter spent their first few months living in outdoor kennels, getting some good socialization with their people, but since their human dad is battling cancer, they couldn't be the top priority.

Named for soccer super-stars, Dembele and her teammates arrived with soft, friendly temperaments, eager and ready to learn to play the game of being beloved pets and adventure partners! Potty training, age-appropriate socialization, and leash walking will  still need some good coaching and practice after adoption! A home with other animals is likely a fit with thoughtful introductions.

PAWSITIVY BUCKS TRAINING FOR NEW ADOPTEES
To help get families started with the training and socializing, the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation provides "Pawsitivity Bucks" with every dog adoption: a $200 training voucher for use with a certified local trainer, so you can learn how to best communicate and teach your new dog. All dogs and cats are already spayed or neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, and microchipped before adoption, so you can fully focus on getting to know one another and teaching your new dog about your routines, neighborhood, and favorite activities.

• This Saturday, August 1, with promotional help and sponsorship from NBC and TeleMundo, the shelter is joining with shelters across the country to try to "Clear the Shelters"! ALL ADOPTIONS WILL BE FREE.

• Saturday August 1, August 22nd and August 29th! Thursday, August 6th, 6-9pm, "Jade" will play at Cork & Fork at the north end of the Capitola Mall property as a shelter Foundation fundraiser

• Saturday, August 8th, 1-5pm, BeerThirty will celebrate their "Beerthday" with a shelter fundraiser and we'll have some adoptable dogs there to meet

• Saturday, August 15th is our 11th annual Parks and Rex Dog Pool Party fundraiser at Simpkins Family Swim Center from 11am-4pm.  Sign up online at scparks.com.
