Have a look at Willow, this week's this week's Pets of the Week at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. She's a beautiful, all-white, short-haired, 5 year old cat with gorgeous yellow eyes. She has a cute, rounded build and face - called a "cobby" body type in cat circles. She tends to be a little bit shy, slightly more so with men, and when she's faced with new experiences or environments. She was initially pretty fearful at the shelter - hissing shyly at people who approached or opened her little cat condo door, but she's gotten more comfortable over the 1.5 months she's been with the shelter.

She's made friends with quite a few staff and volunteers, and she's gotten more used to meeting new people. This is one of the GOOD things that can come from time at the shelter - animals tend to get more comfortable with more people while here, since everyone treats them with care and attention to their signals and body language. An excellent adage for a cat like Willow is "let the cat pet YOU!" If you give her a little space and a little time, she comes around nicely, but if you're too forward about making contact, she'll shy away.
Willow has lived with polite dogs and kids in the past, but will do best in a quieter home, with quieter people and lifestyles, and where she'll be kept as an indoor-only cat. As an all-white cat, it's especially important that she's kept indoors. Both her coloring and her body type make her more susceptible to attacks by predators, who tend to be most active as light fades, and when white cats stand out like bright lightbulbs in their environment!

The adoption fee for adult cats is normally $110, but a generous donor has sponsored Willow's adoption fee to remove any barrier for a well-matched home.  She is spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated and waiting for her new home and family at 1001 Rodriguez St., open 11:00 am to 6:00 pm daily.

• Saturday, August 15, 11am - 4pm: Parks & Rex, a dog pool party fundraiser for County Parks Youth programs and the Animal Shelter. Information and ticketing links at www.scanimalshelter.org.
• Sunday, August 16, 10am - 5pm: the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation will be at the Scotts Valley Art, Wine and Beer Festival from for "dog day"
• Saturday, August 22, 8 - 11am: GOAT Fitness in Live Oak will host "Pilates for Dogs" a fundraising class, and adoptable dogs and puppies from the shelter will be there
• Sunday, August 23, 12 - 2pm: Shelter volunteers will bring dogs to Sante Adairius Brewing in Capitola after a fun group hike to meet potential adopters
• Wednesday, August 26, 5:30 - 8:30pm: "Paint and Sip" at Steel Bonnet Brewing in Scotts Valley - where you can paint a picture of a pet with help from artist Suzy Rad
