Pet-O-Rama: Daisy PLUS Upcoming Shelter Events and FREE ADOPTIONS THIS SATURDAY 8/29Week of August 24th 2027
Posted: Tuesday, August 25, 2026
Daisy is this week's Pet of the Week at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. She's a sweet rabbit with the cool markings of the Silver Marten breed and super-soft short fur. Silver Martens are deep jet black on top, with little cream or tan markings just around their eyes & nose, then under their chins and on their bellies. SO COOL LOOKING! Although she was found as a stray, she has clearly lived in a home in the past. She's not only well-socialized to people, she's also very tidy and litter box trained. She would likely do well with another rabbit with an appropriate introduction. The shelter doesn't know her exact age since she was a stray, but she has a defined dewlap which is the adorable pouch that adult female rabbits get under their chin, so she's likely 1-2 years old. The shelter recommends that all adopted domestic rabbits live inside your home and be given space to explore, play and exercise. And of course all pet rabbits, just like dogs and cats, should be spayed or neutered, so you don't unexpectedly end up with 12 or 20 or 30 rabbits in the next 8 months! Rabbits are incredibly fast at reproducing, unless you take special action! Spay or neuter is always included when you adopt a rabbit from a good shelter or rescue group like Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter or their friends at Rabbit Haven. This Saturday is another "Clear the Shelters" free adoption event, with have free adoptions all day long at the shelter in Live Oak. The shelter's amazing rabbit volunteers will also have adoptable rabbits at the Petsmart in downtown Santa Cruz this Saturday from noon to 3pm. It's a great chance to meet some rabbits in a quieter, non-shelter environment and to learn more about rabbit care from some very knowledgeable rabbit experts. Then you can decide if you have room in your heart and home for an adorable pet bunny...or maybe two! Other Upcoming Shelter Events
For more info, listen to Pet-O-Rama at 11am Thursdays here on the pig or visit the shelter, located at 1001 Rodriguez St. in Santa Cruz and open from 11am to 6pm every day. |
