Pet-o-Rama: Paco PLUS Upcoming Shelter Events
Week of September 7th 2026
Posted: Monday, September 7, 2026
The Marx Brothers might say "Why a Duck?" We say, "Why not?" So have a look at Paco, this week's Pet of the Week at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. Paco was surrendered to the shelter in mid-July. In his prior home, he lived in harmony with a chicken, and our staff notes that he is a very human-oriented, social duck. If you've never had a duck before, they are quite similar to chickens—except they waddle, wiggle, and quack!
In addition to a dry area, ducks need regular access to water for swimming and grooming.
Besides a balanced diet of duck pellets, grains, fresh veggies, and clean water, ducks require a predator-proof spot to sleep at night. They also need a secure outdoor enclosure to keep them from flying or roaming away.
Ducks are playful, full of personality, and incredibly entertaining. If you would like to visit Paco—or the shelter's other adoptable duck, Sweeny, who previously lived with a dog and would likely thrive with a flock of female ducks—please stop by the shelter.
