Meet Maracas, the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Pet of the Week! He's the most handsomest of cats, and quite personable! Maracas came to the Shelter as a stray after a concerned citizen found him and was unable to care for him themselves.  The good Samaritan was concerned about a urinary issue. Over the past month and a half, the medical team at the Shelter has been monitoring Maraca's health, as well as falling in love with his charming personality.

He is the King of snuggles and when you walk into the clinic suite, you will either see Maracas running towards you, like a dog, to greet you or curled up on people's laps making biscuits. Strangers? I don't think he knows the definition. He loves hard and needs someone who can monitor his behavior as he can sometimes overstimulate. Cat-savvy adopters would be the best fit for this guy to observe if his tail twitches, ears go back or he just seems a little too "buzzy" with excitement.. then he probably needs a break to calm down.

As much as Maracas is exuberant, he can also be an adorably sleepy cat – sleeping away most of the day while the medical team is in surgery or tending to the other animals at the Shelter. He has met a variety of cats and dogs that have come through the clinic doors – from teeny 1 month old kittens to 140-pound mastiffs. A home with other animals may be a fit with an appropriate introduction. Maracas does have some street smarts from his life before the Shelter but would be best as an indoor, supervised kitty moving forward. Maracas will need to be on a special veterinary diet, likely for the rest of this life, which keeps his urinary condition stable. Adopters will need to monitor his litterbox habits to ensure he stays in tip top shape and follow up with their vet if anything seems out of the ordinary. Maracas would do well in a variety of homes and will provide character, laughter and company to those who open up their hearts to him. Could it be you?

• Friday, October 2nd join the shelter at Woodhouse Brewing at 119 Madrone St in Santa Cruz for a Fundraiser Dance Party with DJ Thugshells.  Howl-O-Ween at the Woofhouse with raffles and a Costume Contest 6-10pm
• Wednesday, October 7th from 2:15-3:15pm the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter will host Cuddle Connections.  Small group sessions tailed for seniors (50+).  Space is limited, RSVP to nga@scanimalshelterfoundation.org.
• Saturday, October 10th Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing will host a 21st Anniversary Party from 12-8pm. There will be DJs, a vintage popup by Mother load, a record popup by Offshore sounds and Pizza by Side Quest Pizza, Sons Pizza and La Pizza Piccolo.  Proceeds will go to the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter.
